Labour + Lavender
As Certified Aromatherapists, Lavender is one of the most-used powerhouse essential oils in our toolbox. Among its many benefits, Lavender may be an effective therapeutic option for labour pain.
A 2016 clinical trial was conducted to investigate the effect of Lavender essential oil inhalation on the severity of labour pain and duration of labour. The experimental group received 2 drops of 10% Lavender dilution dropped into their palms and inhaled for three minutes at three stages of labour. The severity of the labour pain and duration of labour was measured before and after the Lavender was inhaled. The control group was treated with distilled water as a placebo in the similar ways, too.
The results for the experimental group were significant. At the final measurement stage (9-10cm dilation) the pain was rated at 9.6 for the Lavender group before inhalation and the pain rating dropped by 20% to 7.6 after. There was no change in pain rating for the placebo group.
The conclusion of the study was that Lavender essence aromatherapy may be an effective therapeutic option for pain management for women in labour. It did not have an impact on the duration of labour.
